Clipper Ship PHANTOM at Sea
18" x 24" oil on canvas

The painting depicts the clipper ship PHANTOM at sea, close-hauled on the starboard tack. She is flying her house flag, code signals and national ensign for an approaching man-of-war.

The medium clipper ship PHANTOM was built by Samuel Lapham at Medford, Massachusetts in 1852.

The vessel was strongly built and was nearly as lofty as the larger and celebrated extreme clipper ship FLYING CLOUD. Her owners were Crocker and Sturgis of Boston and Crocker and Warren of New York. PHANTOM was engaged mostly in the San Francisco and Far East trades. She was lost in the South China Sea in 1862.
