U.S.S. Constitution
vs H.M.S. Guerriere 24" x 30" oil
Commissioned work
The painting is of the battle of
August 19, 1812 where U.S.S. Constitution defeated H.M.S. Guerriere
in a short and devastating fight that left the British warship
a drifting wreck some 600 miles east of Boston, Massachusetts.
The work was a commission
where the client wanted to show the battle and at the same time
not obscure CONSTITUTION. I decided to show that part of the
battle where CONSTITUTION had crossed ahead of GUERRIERE and,
after becoming fouled with the jibboom of the British ship, continued
firing her after guns as GUERRIERE lost her fore and mainmasts.
